Description
Title: “Smith Street Singapore”
Artist: “Felix Lim”
Year: 2003
In today’s Singapore, Smith Street is an iconic outdoor eating area with a stretch of food stalls popular with both locals and tourists.
In the past, Smith Street served as a lifeline to the entire Chinatown area particularly after World War 2. Many businesses used Smith Street to connect their businesses to the wider community, supplying food and household essentials to a growing population.
This is another sight of Singapore captured by Felix as he saw it, before it was developed into the modern commercial area it is today. Through paintings such as these, Felix strives to preserve the culture and history of Singapore through its classic buildings and locations that are slowly disappearing. This is a valuable collection that can remind future generations of the origins of Singapore’s unique and vibrant culture.
