Description

Title: “Life Along the Singapore River”
Artist: “Felix Lim”
Year: 2002

Here, Felix has captured another classic Singaporean scene from the Singapore River that can no longer be found today. Shophouses used to line the bank of the river where traders would sell their wares daily from early in the morning to late at night. The small wooden boats (known as bumboats) used to line the shores of the harbour and merchants would compete with each other in a lively competition of price and value. Today, these bumboats are all but gone along with many of the shophouses.

This is part of a series of paintings by Felix where he strives to preserve the culture and history of Singapore through its classic buildings and locations that are slowly disappearing. This is a valuable collection that can remind future generations of the origins of Singapore’s unique and vibrant culture.

Dimensions: 82cm x 67cm, 2002.
